Matthew Norman

Matthew James Norman (born 17 September 1986) is an Australian man who was arrested with three others in 2005 after Indonesian police uncovered of heroin in a suitcase in their hotel room in Kuta. He was convicted of drug trafficking as a member of the Bali Nine. On 15 February 2006, Norman was sentenced to life imprisonment, a sentence that was increased to the death penalty on 6 September 2006 as a result of an unsuccessful appeal. However, after a full confession, the Indonesian Supreme Court reinstated the original sentence of life imprisonment upon a subsequent appeal, and after nearly twenty years of incarceration in an Indonesian prison, as a result of diplomatic negotiations, he was eventually released along with the remaining incarcerated members of the Bali Nine.
