Anita Anand

Anita Indira Anand (born May 20, 1967) is a Canadian lawyer, academic, and politician, who is serving as the Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2025. She is the first visible minority in Canadian history to hold the role. She has represented the riding of Oakville East in the House of Commons since the 2025 federal election, sitting as a member of the Liberal Party. She previously represented the riding of Oakville in the House of Commons from 2019 to 2025.

In the 29th Canadian Ministry, chaired by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Anand held several key posts. From 2019 to 2021, she served as Receiver General of Canada and Minister of Public Services and Procurement, overseeing Canada’s procurement of vaccines and personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic. From 2021 to 2023, she was Minister of National Defence, playing a central role in Canada's efforts to provide military aid to Ukraine during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. From 2023 to 2024, she served as President of the Treasury Board, and from 2024 to 2025, as Minister of Transport and Minister of Internal Trade. ''Maclean’s'' described her at one point as the Trudeau government’s “all-round fixer.”

In the 30th Canadian Ministry, chaired by Prime Minister Mark Carney, Anand was appointed Registrar General of Canada and Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. She held the role for two months prior to her appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs following the 2025 federal election.
